The Saint Paul Community Literacy Consortium empowers the community by building literacy in a collaborative, inclusive, comprehensive manner. Enhanced literacy and improved basic skills support a high quality of life by providing preparation for meaningful employment and higher education, fostering better K12 outcomes and stronger families, and supporting economic development. SPCLC contributes significantly to workforce development by partnering statewide with DEED, the Ramsey County WIB, and other organizations.

SPCLC received the 2014 PEGASUS Award this August at the Summer Institute in St. Cloud. This is granted bi-annually to an ABE program or consortium by the State of Minnesota (MDE-ABE) and Literacy Action Network, Minnesota's professional organization. It recognizes superior program quality and excellent adult student achievement. Here is a summary of SPCLC accomplishments cited by the review committee.

SPCLC serves as a statewide resource for effective ABE programming, as a public policy resource at all levels, and as a national model for effective public/private collaboration to meet literacy needs.

Current SPCLC Initiatives

Northstar Digital Literacy Project

SPCLC is a primary convener of the Northstar Digital Literacy Project. Individuals can assess their ability to perform basic tasks on computers and online through online, self-guided modules.

College Readiness Academy

The College Readiness Academy (CRA) is an exciting new effort to help ABE students prepare for college while limiting or eliminating their need to complete Dev Ed classes. This will help students complete their certificate or degree programs more rapidly, saving time and money.

Distance Learning

Adult learners participating in SPCLC distance learning combined with face-to-face classes last year had outcomes 55% higher than those who participated only in classroom work!

In 2014, SPCLC delivered 52,295 hours of distance learning to 1,827 adult learners. SPCLC also supports St. Paul Public Schools ABE in the statewide Distance Learning Supplemental Services Project.
